A guide to womens sports at Hungry Horse
Sport has a magical way of bringing people together, whether it's the collective cheers when your team scores the winning goal or the sighs of solidarity when you face another defeat.
While men may have dominated the screens in previous years, women's sport is FINALLY getting the recognition it's long deserved, and the stars are taking their rightful spot at the centre of the stage.
From football to cricket, rugby and tennis, female athletes are smashing it and inspiring the next generation too. The England Lionesses did us all proud when they brought football home for the 2025 Euros, following their win at the 2022 tournament, while the Red Roses continue to dominate the rugby pitch.
And with so much excitement still to catch this 2025, your local Hungry Horse sports pub is the perfect place to watch the action live on our screens.
Why women’s sport is reaching new heights
Women's sport is nothing new. It's been around for ages, with football matches dating back to the late 1800s. During World War I, factory teams attracted big crowds, with charity matches at Goodison Park welcoming audiences of up to 53,000.But a ban was placed on women's football in the 1920s and only lifted in 1971, marking 50 years of amazing players being sidelined.
It's taken a while for audiences to catch up, but there's no doubt that the England Lionesses proved the power of the women’s game when they smashed expectations and brought football home at both the 2025 Euros and the 2022 tournament.
This summer also saw the stars of tennis take to the courts at Wimbledon, and the tournament pulled in record viewing figures, with 4.1 million watching the women's final between Iga Swiatek and Amanda Anisimova on the BBC.
Women's sport not only has the power to unite us but also inspire our next generation of talented players, whether they show a strong kick, a crafty backhand or a promising try.
Hungry Horse sports pubs are the perfect host for live sports, so let's hear it for the girls and get set for some amazing games.
What’s coming up?
