It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas

Christmas is full of magic for kids. Everything has gone full sparkle mode, school's out for a few weeks, and the promise of a stocking full of presents is fast approaching.

Let's face it, the countdown to Christmas is just as important as the day itself. And it can be wonderful for parents too. Especially getting to see the big smiles on little ones' faces.

There's an instant buzz in the air as you pick up your tree and decorate it with ornaments, old and new. You check the weather forecast to see whether this will be the year you wake up to a festive blanket of snow and set reminders for the TV line-up so everyone can plonk themselves on the sofa in time.

You excitedly open every new window on your advent calendar, because there's no such thing as being too old for a dose of daily joy. You indulge in hot chocolates with whipped cream and buttery mince tarts. 'Tis the season, after all!

Then there’s the flurry of festive activities. Trips to panto with heroes, villains and cries of 'Oh no, it isn’t!' and 'Oh yes, it is!' Christmas markets illuminated by twinkly lights, where you can keep warm with hot drinks and pick up festive trinkets from cosy wooden cabins.

The sheer anticipation of all the gifts, family parties, food, drinks and festive fun. It's what makes this the most wonderful time of the year.

But we know that for kids, nothing compares to the sheer joy of meeting Santa Claus himself. The excitement of seeing his fluffy white beard and red velvet suit and telling him the presents they'd most love to unwrap on the day.

Hungry Horse is the perfect place to capture those precious moments. At our Breakfast with Santa 2025, we’re waiting to make your child’s Christmas truly amazing!

Step into Christmas at Hungry Horse

We like to think our pubs put people in good spirits all year round, but we’re brimming with seasonal joy at Christmas.

Our Festive Fayre Menu starts early on the 11th of November, so that's plenty of time to do as many rounds of a seasonal roast as you please. Stop by for dinner with the family, enjoy a holiday hangout with mates or gather the work crew for a cracking Christmas meal.

You can even let us host you on the big day, itself. Yep, just sack off the peeling of potatoes and pre-heating of ovens, and let us treat you and your gang to a festive feast you don’t have to cook.

Fussy eater? No problem. Hate sprouts? Skip ’em. Not into turkey? We’ve got plenty more to pile on your plate.

Christmas time, deals on food and wine

The festive period can be an expensive time of year, so let Hungry Horse take the pressure off. We don’t believe dining out should be a rare treat. At Christmas, or any other time of the year. That’s why we’ve got daily deals to keep costs low. Stop by for a family reunion, a catch-up with pals or an office outing, and enjoy great quality at prices you’ll love. It’s our gift to you.

Our present to parents

Christmas may be a time for kids, but parents should get a little love too. Our pubs are designed with families in mind, which is why we offer kids’ menus to please little mouths, and outdoor play areas to give parents a bit of a pause.

Check out our pubs with Wacky Warehouse indoor soft play too. The weather outside may be frightful, but the choice of super slides and bouncy ball pits is oh so delightful. Especially if parents can savour a sip in peace.

Get the lowdown on the Lapland legend

Before your little one meets Santa, why not brush up on some festive knowledge? For such an iconic character, you may not know all the legends of this Lapland local. But we've got a stocking full of facts!

Why is he called Santa?

Santa’s name is believed to have evolved from his Dutch nickname, Sinter Klass, which is the shortened version of his full Dutch name, Sint Nikolaas. However, we tend to know him as Saint Nicholas! The term Father Christmas also has deep roots in British history. The name started out as a symbol of holiday cheer, but during the Victorian era, it blended with the image of Santa.

Where did Santa come from?

The legend of Saint Nick goes way back to the fourth century. His early festivities took place in Myra, which is now known as the country of Turkey. He is said to have performed resurrections, plus he anonymously gifted gold to unsuspecting paupers by throwing it down the chimney. Ring any bells?

His name spread throughout Europe, and over time, his generosity and goodwill caused the 6th of December to become known as St Nicholas Day.

Special markets in the Netherlands began to pop up, with toys and treats made especially for the occasion. Men would even pretend to be Santa by dressing up in red bishop’s costumes.

How many reindeer does Santa have?

Let's run through them all. You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen, Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen. And, of course, the most famous of all - Rudolph with his shiny red nose! That means there are nine trusted reindeer who help fly Santa's sleigh on Christmas Eve.

What does Santa leave for naughty children?

Santa is super organised at Christmas. He makes a list, checks it twice, and finds out which kids have been naughty or nice. And while the nice kids get to enjoy opening their perfect presents, tradition says that naughty kids get a lump of coal. Bit harsh, we know, but it would serve as a good reminder to behave in time for the next Christmas!
