Our top five things to do with kids during the hols

Looking for the best things to do near you with kids during the school break? Whether it’s summer or Christmas, these five fantastic activities are sure to get you off to a great start.

1.Go to a theme park

Kick off the holidays with a thrilling day at a theme park! There's nothing quite like the adrenaline rush of roller coasters, water rides and all the excitement that comes with them.

Alton Towers is a top pick in the West Midlands, offering everything from jaw-dropping rides to the enchanting CBeebies Land for the little ones. After all the fun, why not recharge at one of our pubs nearby? The Weathervane on the outskirts of Stoke is ideal for a family-friendly meal after an exhilarating day out. Better still, it’s also got a hotel attached, so you can stay there for a lot less than at Alton Towers!

Thorpe Park in Surrey is another must-visit if you love rides, packed with loads more heart-pounding attractions. Head to the Twynersh afterwards to end the day on a high, which is only a short walk away from the theme park!

2. Hit the arcades

If you’re still buzzing from the thrills of the theme park, why not dive into some arcade fun? Many parks have arcades packed with classic games, but you can also find them at fun fairs, amusement parks and even in shopping centres like the Trafford Centre near Manchester.

Arcades are one of the best things to do with kids! Test your skills on claw machines, shoot some hoops or battle them in a game of air hockey. If you’ve been at the Trafford Centre, grab a bite at the Matchstick Man after all the fun. Just a couple of miles away in Salford, the whole gang can refuel and share their high scores!

3. Get cultural

Museums can be a treasure trove of fun and learning for kids, sparking curiosity and imagination. Eureka! The National Children's Museum in Halifax is a hands-on wonderland, while Manchester's Science and Industry Museum brings science and its history to life with interactive exhibits.

London’s Natural History Museum is another gem, with its fascinating dinosaur displays and immersive activities. Wherever you visit, pop into a nearby Hungry Horse pub when you’ve finished exploring!

After an interactive adventure at Eureka, wind down in the Noble Comb in West Yorkshire. Following fun science in Manchester, pop into the Old Rectory in Stockport and get stuck into some delicious food and drink. Or, make like the dinosaurs at London’s Natural History Museum, and gather at the fantastic watering hole that is the Ballot Box in Middlesex.

Wherever you find yourself, be sure to kick back and enjoy a well-earned break while the kids swap tales about all they’ve discovered.

4. See some animals

We may love horses, but we know your kids probably adore all sorts of animals! From zoos to wildlife centres and even aquariums, there are so many ways to get up close with nature’s coolest creatures.

Plus, we’re all about supporting places focused on conservation. London Zoo and Chester Zoo are top picks for a wild day out, while the National Sea Life Centre in Birmingham offers an underwater adventure.

Whether it’s furry, feathered or finned friends your kids want to see, you’re in for an animal-packed treat! After a big day of meeting the animals at London Zoo, stop by a nearby Hungry Horse pub like the Greene Man.

If you’ve had the pleasure of making furry new friends at Chester Zoo, we highly recommend grabbing a drink or two at the Oaklands Hotel.

Birmingham boasts tons of Hungry Horse pubs, perfect for unwinding after a busy day on your feet, and the Billesley is definitely one to check out! Get stuck into a tasty meal and sip on a nice cold drink in the beer garden.
